Subject: Chuck Ingram update Fri Aug 21st
Here's a Friday update on Chuck's condition from Joyce.
Background: Chuck became jaundiced two weeks ago and was admitted to
Menifee Med Cntr where he was treated with plasma, because his blood wasn't
clotting well and tests were started. He was transferred to UCI in Orange
for more tests and a stent was put in one duct so bile could move out of the
liver. They thought he had pancreatic cancer but now think it is liver
cancer. There is a mass in the liver and they've been unable to get a
tissue sample to confirm for sure this is cancer so they can begin
treatment. The first stent was too short, not allowing the bile to flow out
of the liver so his jaundice continues...
Good Morning,
Well yesterday, Aug 20th, was a day Chuck had to make a decision on what
he wants to do.
1) Have surgery and hopefully take out all the cancer and 1/2 of his
liver, which would be a very hard surgery on him. He does have a weak heart.
The doctor said he had a heart attack sometime this year and he didn't even
know it. There is a possibility that if he has the surgery he might have
another heart attack and might not even make it. The Doctors will try and
get all the cancer but they can never be sure and the recovery time is very
long.
2) The Doctors would put in two stents, one in each lobe in the liver and
this would clear up the jaundice and give him about 1 year to live. He would
have a good 10 months and then would go on comfort care until the end. They
will try to obtain a tissue sample of the tumor at the same time they insert
the stents.
This was a very hard decision to make but Chuck feels as though the
second option would be the best for him. They will be inserting two longer
stents endoscopically (hopefully today, he's the last one on the schedule)
and then he would come home on Monday. If they don't get to him today they
will do it on Monday and he would come home either Tuesday or Wednesday.
Thank You!...for the E-Mails and cards. Please keep Chuck in your
prayers.
